The event has been played in San Diego since 1952. From 1989 through 2009, it was known as the Buick Invitational. In 2010, Farmers Insurance came on board as sponsor, It would have been called the San Diego Open had a title sponsor not been found. The tournament, which has a $5.3 million purse, was won last year by Nick Watney.

More than just a golf tournament in lavish La Jolla, the Century Club of San Diego Invitational is a highlight of the annual PGA Tour schedule. The best of the best will be the center of the attention, as the biggest names in golf shoot for a coveted early-season win.

2012 Farmers Insurance Open Winner

Brandt Snedeker won the 2012 Farmers Insurance Open in a play-off. Snedeker, in the group ahead of him, hit wedge to a foot for birdie and a 67, then drove up to the media tent for an interview as the runner-up.

2011 Farmers Insurance Open Winner

Bubba Watson wins 2011 Farmers Insurance Open by one shot. Phil Mickelson is second after his eagle try on No. 18 stops short, and Tiger Woods finishes 15 shots behind at Torrey Pines. Watson's final-round score of five-under-par 67 gave him a four-day total of 16-under 272 and a winner's check of $1,044,000. This was his second PGA Tour title.

2010 Farmers Insurance Open Winner

Ben Crane captured the trophy at the 2010 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines with a one-shot victory over Michael Sim, Brandt Snedeker and Marc Leishman. The tourney went down to the wire after Crane missed a putt at 17, opening the door for Sim not to be his day. Crane ended the day with a 2-under 70 for his third career victory and first in nearly five years. But he didn’t know he had won until his playing partner Ryuji Imada, who had led going into Sunday’s round, congratulated him. Phil Mickelson ended the tourney in 19th place.

2009 Farmers Insurance Open Winner

Golf Betting Odds

In 2009, golfer Nick Watney won the Buick Open Invitational when he was three shots behind with five holes to play.

First came a mini-collapse by John Rollins, a combination of bad swings and bad breaks.

Then it was a 40-foot birdie putt across the 16th green by Watney, who remembered the severity of the slope at the back of the green from when he three-putted at the U.S. Open last summer at Torrey Pines.
