The Northern Trust Open, formerly known as the Nissan Open and originally known as the Los Angeles Open, is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour. Debuting in 1926 at Los Angeles Country Club, and is played annually in February. The golf tournament has been staged at various courses throughout the Los Angeles area before permanently settling at Riviera Country Club in 1973.

The overall prize equals 6.5 million US dollars, the winner gets 918 thousand. Outside of the major championships, the Northern Trust Open is the fourth-oldest event on TOUR, trailing only the BMW Championship, the Canadian Open and the Valero Texas Open.

About Riviera Country Club Golf Course

The Riviera Country Club hosted the 1948 U.S. Open as well as the 1983 and 1995 PGA Championships. The PGA Tour's Nissan Open is also held here each year. The large number of professional tournaments held at this club should indicate the quality of this course. In 1992, the greens were renovated by Ben Crenshaw.

"GOLF Magazine" selected it 16th among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 24th in 1997 and 26th in 1999. "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 21st out of "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 30th in 1998 and 31st in 1999. This club does not accept outside play on the weekends.

2011 Northern Trust Open winner

Aaron Baddeley has won the 2011 Northern Trust Open for his first PGA Tour victory in four years. Baddeley closed with a 2-under 69 for a two-shot victory over SinghCouples birdied the opening three holes for a one-shot lead that revved up Riviera, but it all changed on the seventh hole — a birdie by Baddeley from the fringe, a double bogey for Couples.

2010 Northern Trust Open winner

Steve Stricker won for the fourth time in his last 15 starts, moving up to No. 2 in the world for the second time in his career. It was his eighth career victory. Stricker finished at 16-under 268 and earned $1.152 million to go over $25 million for his career.

2009 Nissan Open winner

Phil Mickelson began the final round with a 4-stroke lead, eagled the first hole, then had a run of bogeys. He eventually lost the lead to Steve Stricker, but Mickelson birdied the 70th and 71st holes to reclaim the lead, then parred the last for the win. Mickelson posted rounds of 63, 72, 62 and 72, 15-under total.
